What happens when a file is deleted?

When a file is deleted, and the Recycle Bin is emptied, the data present in the file is not erased permanently. Instead, the disk space occupied by the file is marked as free space. The file table entry of the deleted file is the only thing that gets erased. This might result in overwriting of the disk space occupied by the deleted file, which consequently leads to permanent erasure of data.

Why is deleted data, not permanently erased when we hit the delete button?

The O.S. is constantly performing background tasks, and is very busy completing tasks that are far more important than deletion of a file. If the O.S. was to perform permanent erasure on each and every deleted file, the number of tasks that get queued up for completion, would reduce the efficiency of the O.S.
